Aokigahara, an infostealer malware also known as Aoki, has been updated to deliberately target credentials for AI development tools including Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor, along with SSH keys and cloud platform secrets.

The signal matters more than the malware. Earlier 2026 variants didn't target AI tools at all. Now attackers are writing custom code to extract AI session tokens and API keys. That change happens when stolen goods get expensive.

[Check Point Research's analysis](https://research.checkpoint.com/2026/infostealer-riding-the-ai-train/) and [parallel work from Symantec's Threat Hunter Team](https://www.security.com/threat-intelligence/aoki-infostealer-ai-targeting) both document the shift. The stolen credentials unlock resale opportunities: account takeover, API quota abuse, access to connected repositories and CI/CD systems.

For developers mixing personal projects and work on the same machine, the threat model has changed. A generic infostealer grabbed everything; you rotated, recovered, moved on. Aokigahara is hunting for one thing now. That specificity means the attackers have a buyer waiting.
