Proofpoint's [analysis of BlueMoon](https://www.proofpoint.com/us/blog/threat-insight/once-bluemoon-multiple-state-aligned-threat-actors-rapidly-adopt-novel-exploit) reads like a field report that got packaged with an AI hypothesis. The exploit kit chains three Chrome and Windows zero-days adopted within days by four state-aligned threat actors. The code does contain unusual patterns: extensive diagnostic logging, markdown-formatted handover documents, detailed comments on implementation constraints, and crude OPSEC choices like unencrypted curl downloads.

But Proofpoint's own language matters: "no single artifact conclusively confirms AI-assisted development." The evidence is circumstantial. Rapid adoption could reflect solid threat actor coordination or a leaked proof-of-concept shared efficiently across trusted channels. The AI angle is speculative.

The concrete story is the patch-gap. Chrome and Windows bugs were already patched upstream but persisted in stable public releases. That window is known, repeatable, and doesn't need AI to unlock it. State-aligned threat actors reverse-engineering a public patch release is routine tradecraft, not evidence of automation at the exploit level.

Speed is real. The cause remains unproven. The patch-gap is the tighter story.
