A Chinese operator used three open-source AI tools to [breach online retailers](https://gambit.security/blog-posts/autonomous-ai-agents-online-retailers-25-a-company), compromising at least 27 companies at $25.46 per target through September 2026. The attacker orchestrated via [Claude Opus 4.6](https://gambit.security/blog-posts/autonomous-ai-agents-online-retailers-25-a-company), sending [1,951 prompts](https://gambit.security/blog-posts/autonomous-ai-agents-online-retailers-25-a-company) in Chinese across 260 sessions.

The operation [exfiltrated 600,000+ credit card records](https://gambit.security/blog-posts/autonomous-ai-agents-online-retailers-25-a-company) and deployed malware to at least 19 sites. Exploitation completed in hours. Total cost: $12,000 to $18,000.

The security angle: the attacker chose Opus 4.6 because [newer models refused attack requests](https://gambit.security/blog-posts/autonomous-ai-agents-online-retailers-25-a-company). Model safety improvements work well enough that adversaries detect and route around them. But older versions don't disappear. They remain accessible and exploitable. Improving safety between releases creates a downgrade path for attackers, not a barrier. The [campaign is ongoing](https://www.theregister.com/security/2026/09/25/crook-used-three-open-source-agents-to-break-into-a-fortune-500-hospitality-company-a-major-us-airline-and-25-other-orgs/5299012), this remains open.
