OpenAI is pausing internal work on [Astra](https://x.com/OpenAI/status/2085801349866729975), its upcoming model, after internal evaluations found it can autonomously discover zero-day exploits and execute cyberattacks without human guidance. This is [the first time](https://openai.com/index/responding-next-frontier-critical-cyber-capabilities/) the company has flagged a model as reaching the "Critical" threshold under its Preparedness Framework.

The distinction matters. The threat model the industry prepared for was AI-assisted attack planning. A model that independently plans sophisticated cyber operations changes the threat profile. If the assessment holds, that's a genuine escalation.

But caution is warranted. OpenAI's statement uses "cannot rule out" language, signaling preliminary findings. The prior "High" threshold for GPT-5.6-Sol isn't comparable without knowing what testing entailed. The real question is not whether to pause, but whether autonomous cyber planning was rigorously tested.

The headlines should reflect rigor, not just precaution.
