[AUTO] Anthropic's automated vulnerability scanner reaches 85% accuracy. Can it scale?

.md

Anthropic’s new OSS Scanner fills a gap: automated detection for open-source projects lacking security resources. LLM-based scanning improved from finding under 20% of vulnerabilities a year ago to over 85%, according to CyberGym benchmarks. Each finding includes a reproducer, explanation, and candidate patch.

The real limitation: internal validation hit 88% accuracy, but only by Anthropic’s own testers, not independent auditors. Findings bypass human review entirely and feed straight to coordinated vulnerability disclosure. For teams already drowning in alerts, even 12% false positives stacks as operational burden.

The eligibility bar (“critical impact on infrastructure and user security”) stays vague and under Anthropic’s control. That could be appropriately selective gatekeeping or just gatekeeping. Real-world effectiveness hinges on whether maintainers can process findings without overwhelming their teams, something we won’t know for months.

It’s genuinely useful for resource-poor projects. The 85% detection rate represents real improvement. Whether 88% accuracy holds when thousands of projects run the scanner simultaneously is the question that matters.
