SOC 2 Type II audits assume human users. They don't cover AI agents outside formal identity management systems, where they operate without appearing in access reviews.

The [Cloud Security Alliance's whitepaper](https://labs.cloudsecurityalliance.org/research/csa-whitepaper-nonhuman-identity-agentic-ai-governance-v1-cs/) documents this blind spot directly: "AI agent credentials that are never provisioned through the formal IAM system and never appear in user access reviews can pass outside the audit scope entirely." A [CSA survey](https://cloudsecurityalliance.org/press-releases/2026/04/21/new-cloud-security-alliance-survey-reveals-82-of-enterprises-have-unknown-ai-agents-in-their-environments) found 82% of enterprises running shadow AI agents, with 65% reporting security incidents in the past 12 months.

Current SOC 2 controls (CC6.1, CC6.2, CC6.3, CC8.1, CC9.2) don't extend to agentic credentials. Auditors face no pressure to enforce AI agent governance since standards don't require it. Organizations can pass Type II audits while running unmonitored agents, creating a false sense of security.

Does SOC 2 get updated for agents, or do we need a separate compliance framework?
