A YouTube explainer claims F1 cars let AI decide when to unleash their electric power. The deployment is heavily automated, but it runs on deterministic maps the team bakes in beforehand and the driver selects with a switch. The car carries a single standard ECU built by McLaren Applied, and the FIA spec for it forbids exactly the self-adjusting, closed-loop behaviour that “AI control” implies. Real machine learning does shape deployment, but it lives back at the factory, not in the loop on track.
Watch a modern Formula 1 car around a lap and the electric power seems to have a mind of its own. It arrives on corner exit, tapers off down the straight, vanishes at odd moments when the driver is flat on the throttle. That last one, new for 2026, even slows the car down while the driver’s foot is buried. It looks like something is thinking. So the claim that “F1 hybrid deployment is controlled by AI” spreads easily. It is wrong in the way that matters, and the reason is more interesting than the myth.
The car runs on a script, not a brain
Energy deployment in F1 is automated. That part is true. The driver is not sitting there dialing kilowatts with a knob. But automated is not the same as intelligent.
What the driver actually does is pick a mode. The steering wheel carries a bank of rotary switches, and each position selects a different pre-programmed deployment strategy the engineers built during the week: more aggressive here, harvest-biased there, a hotlap map for qualifying. The car’s software then executes that map against inputs like throttle position, speed, and battery state. Same inputs, same outputs, every lap. Underneath, it is a big, carefully tuned lookup table with some closed-loop torque control wrapped around it. No model sits in there making judgment calls.
The FIA’s own technical spec for the standard ECU describes exactly this: the driver interface “allows the driver to control configurable inputs to the control strategies via a set of switches, toggles, etc.” Those switch signals get streamed to the ECU and logged, “authenticated to provide a certifiable real-time representation of the driver’s actions.” The regulator wants a receipt for every input, because it is watching for a machine that acts on its own.
The FIA bans the thing you’re picturing
Here is the detail that kills the AI story. Every car on the grid runs the same Standard Electronic Control Unit, supplied since 1993 by McLaren Applied (now Motion Applied), on a contract the FIA has extended to 2030. A single mandated ECU exists for one reason: so the FIA can police what the software is allowed to do.
And the spec is blunt about it. The SECU, the document says, “must not include strategies considered as driver aids. This includes but is not limited to traction control, braking control, launch control, auto clutch, automated gearshift, gear pre-selection and multiple gearshifts sequencing.”
A system that watched what the driver did last lap and adapted its deployment to compensate is the textbook definition of a banned driver aid. F1 outlawed traction control back in 2008 and enforced it with precisely this standard-ECU approach. An adaptive, self-learning deployment controller would be traction control’s smarter cousin, and it would be illegal for the same reason. The power unit is allowed to be automated. It is not allowed to be clever on the driver’s behalf.
2026 made it feel more autonomous, and it still isn’t
The current regulations, which landed this season, lean even harder on the electric side and make the automation more theatrical. The MGU-K now delivers 350kW, nearly triple the old 120kW, the MGU-H is gone, and the battery can be recharged with up to 9MJ per lap.
The showpiece is “super clipping.” As Raceteq explains it, the car will “automatically redirect power (up to 350kW) from the ICE to the battery at various points around the track when a driver is at full throttle, which results in the car automatically slowing down.” A driver flat out down the Suzuka pit straight can feel the car harvest energy against their wishes. Deployment also tapers from 290km/h and hits zero by 355km/h, with a manual override, the DRS replacement, handing a chasing driver an extra burst.
All of that is dramatic. None of it is AI. Super clipping fires at predetermined points to keep the car inside a per-lap energy budget that varies by circuit, from 5MJ at Monza up to 9MJ at Monaco. It is a rule executed by a controller, tuned by engineers, triggered by track position. The irony is that the 2026 rules were meant to reduce energy management and give drivers more freedom, yet they produced the most conspicuously automated behaviour fans have ever felt through the seat.
Where the AI actually is
If you want the real machine learning, look away from the car. Teams run enormous simulation and optimisation pipelines back at base: digital twins of the power unit, race-strategy models, and solvers that grind out the deployment maps a driver will later select on the wheel. Deciding where on a lap to spend those 4MJ bursts for the best lap time is a genuine optimisation problem, and that is where the smart algorithms earn their keep.
The output of all that computation, though, is a static map. It gets loaded onto the car, checked against the rules, and frozen for the session. The intelligence happens on Tuesday in a wind-tunnel building in Brackley or Maranello. On Sunday, the car just runs the script.
So the video is half right and gives the wrong reason. Yes, the driver is not manually deploying the hybrid; the car does it for them. But the thing doing it is a rulebook in silicon, deliberately kept dumb by a regulator that has spent two decades making sure no car out-thinks its driver. The AI stayed home.
